We Weren't Born in Tennessee: A Study of the Swedish Country-Music Culture

The aim is to study the rise and development of Swedish country-music culture from different theoretical perspectives, such as Cultural Studies and the Cultural Study of Music.

The focus of the study is on questions such as: How is Sweden and ”Swedishness” constructed and represented in Swedish country-music culture? How is America (the USA) and ”Americaness” constructed and represented in Swedish country-music culture? How are identity, gender, sexuality, age, and class constructed in this culture?

The study is divided into four parallel workpacks:

  1. The history of Swedish country-music culture
  2. The fans, organisations and magazines
  3. The musicians, the music and the record industry
  4. The festivals and concerts
