Project El Sistema - Musical Learning and Identity in an Intercultural Context

The research project El Sistema - Musical Learning and Identity in an Intercultural Context is a study of the music-school effort that grew out of collaboration between the School of the Arts in Angered and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (GSO). El Sistema is built upon a Venezuelan model, and aims to use music from the Western symphony-orchestra repertoire as a tool for social and human development. The ambition is to serve as a venue for children in Gothenburg playing music and to function as an intercultural dialogue with music as a tool. The purpose of this research project is to study the conditions for musical learning and to explore how identity is created within the framework of El Sistema’s activities.
