Altered forms of education, altered formations of gender?

This study aims at a better understanding of how the professional role of firefighters and equality in the fireservice might be changing since the post-secondary education for firefighters was introduced in 2003. Does this make the profession open for more women? Is it possible that firefighters’ work might be organized and recognized in other ways than before? The qualitative study is conducted using interviews, focus groups and observations. The project particularly addresses firefighters who have undergone this new education and who are employed in the fireservice in various municipalities.

The study is part of the research project Gender, Rescue Services and Organization (GRO). The aim of the project is to produce enhanced and sustainable equality and diversity work within the municipal fire brigades through combining interactive research methodologies with intersectional perspectives. It comprises six research projects in three areas: 1. Education, 2. Technology and Organization, 3. Political processes and organization in relation to equality and diversity work.
