About Åsa Bergman

Åsa Bergman, Ph.D. in Musicology, Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies and Director of Studies in Cultural Analysis.

Research

In her doctoral dissertation from 2009, Growing up with music. Young people’s use of music in school and during leisure time, Åsa studies from a processual and a contextual perspective how teenagers use music to create their identity and develop musical skills in different everyday situations. The dissertation, which was based on a longitudinal ethnographical study, was conducted in a secondary school in Gothenburg.

Since 2011, Åsa conducts an ethnographic research study together with Monica Lindgren, professor of Music Education at the School of Music and Drama, that focuses on the choral and orchestral school El Sistema in Gothenburg. Within this research study possibilities for musical learning and identity creation, among other things, are examined.

Teaching

Åsa has a broad teaching experience and has previously been engaged as a teacher in the subjects Youth Culture, Cultural Studies, Musicology and Scandinavian Studies and in the Bachelor’s Programme Kultur as well as in the Teacher Education Programme.
