About Viveka Kjellmer

General

I hold a Ph.D. in Art History, and am a senior lecturer in Art History and Visual Studies at the Department of Cultural Sciences, University of Gothenburg. I also hold a Degree of Master of Science in Business and Economics, and have a background in advertising and marketing.

Areas of interest

  • Scent and multisensory communication
  • Marketing, advertising and brand identity
  • Design and the design process
  • Fashion, body and costume
  • Expanded scenography
  • Multimodal learning

I am co-founder of the Nordic Network for Scenography, where new connections between scenography, art history and visual studies, multisensory communication and the engaged audience are explored: https://nordic-scenography-network-for-archives-and-research.webnode.se/

I am a part of the Critical Costume Network, an international research platform for costume as wearable art and multisensory practice, and I am a member of the Fashion, Costume and Visual Culture Network, an international research network focused on contemporary visual culture.

Research

I have published studies about the visual language of advertising and the image of scent, as well as the multisensory understanding of fashion exhibitions, visual consumption, and the agency of costume on stage and in art. My current research concerns costume, body and multisensory communication, as well as scented scenography and olfactory art.

As co-editor of the forthcoming anthology Scenography and Art history: Performance Design and Visual Culture (Bloomsbury 2020), and co-editor of a thematic issue on scenography and art history in the Journal of Art History (forthcoming 2020), I aim to establish the scenographic and multisensory perspectives as useful tools within the art historical research field.

Teaching

I teach Art History and Visual Studies on both undergraduate and graduate levels. My main teaching areas are visual culture and multisensory communication, design and contemporary art. I also teach visual communication, cultural economy and entrepreneurship at the Bachelor programme Media, Aesthetics and Cultural Entrepreneurship (MEK).
