Statement against plans to ban Gender Studies Programmes in Hungary

Nyhet: 2018-08-21

It has come to our attention that the Hungarian Government moves forward with its plans to ban Gender Studies Masters programmes at ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences and the Central European University (CEU). This is an attack on academic freedom that the Department of Cultural Sciences condemns. Gender Studies is an internationally recognised area of teaching and research and this targeting clearly carry ideological goals.

In recent years, there have been a range of such attacks on Gender Studies programmes across Europe, in the US and in Latin America. Such attacks link anti-migrant, racist, homophobic and sexist ideologies in the promotion of undemocratic, nationalist agendas and should be strongly resisted.

Hungarian Gender Studies Programmes participates in European academic exchanges. These exchanges have enabled Gender Studies scholars at the University of Gothenburg to meet and collaborate with Hungarian colleagues, which has led to the development of several important research collaborations. Based on these collaborations and exchanges, we are aware of how scientifically rigorous and relevant the work of our Hungarian colleagues is.

The banning of Gender Studies programmes is a major attack on academic freedom. We call upon the Minister of Education to refuse this amendment. We also call upon the European Union, of which Hungary is a member state, to condemn this action. And we stand in solidarity with the network of university teachers in Hungary against banning Gender Studies programmes. Please sign this university teacher’s petition:
