Art-Scenes and Gentrification

Föreläsning

Cultural Geographer Chiara Valli will present her forthcoming article ¿Art-scenes and gentrification.

Symbolic capital accumulation through space in Bushwick, New York City¿. The article proposes a critical account of the agency of artists and cultural entrepreneurs in artist-led gentrification, which combines insights from: the geographies of art-scenes; strategies of symbolic capital accumulation within the cultural field (Bourdieu); critical studies on displacement. It is argued that for its individual members, an art-scene is constructed as a strategy of distinction in the cultural field, in which symbolic capital is accumulated through space. The shifted reputation of the neighbourhood at the early stages of gentrification is instrumental to positioning oneself in the cultural field, through the collective accumulation of symbolic capital of the local art scene as a whole. This contributes sustaining gentrification in space and time. The neighbourhood of Bushwick, one of the newest frontiers of New York City¿s art scene, is the empirical case in focus.

Warmly welcome!
