About Erik Florin Persson

Since the autumn of 2013 Erik Persson is a Doctoral student in Film studies at the Department of Cultural Sciences.

In his work he focuses on the global economical and urban restructurings of the last decades, whereby it has become increasingly important for cities all over the world to market themselves globally as a way of attracting tourists, well-educated inhabitants and investments.

The overall purpose of the study is to analyse marketing films and campaigns for Gothenburg from the last decades and the medial strategies of the municipal company Göteborg & Co, which was founded in the early 1990s, with the mission to market the city. A second purpose of the study is to analyse whether also fiction films from the last decades have been used to market the city. A final purpose of the study is to analyse how the marketing campaigns for the city affects the public spaces of the central city, temporally or more long-lasting, especially during the bigger events hosted by the city.

Although the main focus will be from 1990s onwards, the purpose of the study is also to compare the last decades’ marketing campaigns for Gothenburg with earlier marketing and non-fiction films about Gothenburg, with a focus on aesthetical, thematic and spatial aspects. This could include, for example, the short so called city films that were produced in the early silent-film era around 1900 and the city- and regional films that were produced in the interwar and post-war periods in Sweden.

Before starting his doctoral studies Persson was involved in the research project “Who are getting the right to the city? Governance networks, conflict and resistance in the public space of the CBD” at the Department. In the years 2011–13 he also worked as course administrator for two courses in the university’s Teacher Education programme, LAU 270 and LAU 275, hosted by the Department.

During the academic year 2013–14 Persson will lecture in the course “Culture, democracy and the city” within the department’s Bachelor programme “Kultur”, as well as in courses in the first two semesters of Film Studies, undergraduate level.

Besides his work as a doctoral student Persson writes articles, reviews and essays for different newspapers and cultural magazines in Sweden, such as Svenska Dagbladet, Nerikes Allehanda, FLM, Ord&Bild och Respons.
