About Lena Martinsson

General

Professor in Gender Studies and Associate Professor in Ethnology, at the Department of Cultural Sciences.

Research

A recurrent theme in my work as a researcher is what gender equality norms, diversity, and work for ”good values”do. Which understandings of difference do they produce? What is constructed as normal, correct or proper within these norms? What and who are excluded in these processes? And what is made possible?

My theoretical interest is wide-ranging and embraces queer theory, perspectives on intersectionality, and postcolonial studies. At present I try to develop theoretical perspectives on class by using post-structuralist gender theories and new feminist materialism.

Finished Projects

I have worked with several research projects. I have analysed heterosexual couples’ narratives about their joint lives and scrutinized parliamentarian politicians’ understandings of equality, gender and sexuality. Diversity and interpretations of economy and market in business and industrial life have also been focused, as well as constructions of heteronormativity, class, and ageism in schools. Rhetoric about the important leader has also been of special interest.

Current Research Projects

I have worked, and I am still working, extensively with Professor Eva Reimers, Linköping University. At present we are conducting a study on Class in Neoliberal Education Discourses (Swedish Research Council). I am also working in a project called Imagining Change: Women and the making of civil societies in the Arctic region, Asia, Latin America and Europe (Swedish Research Council). Professor Diana Mulinari, Lund University, is the leader of that project.
